SOC: Where I live

#SOCsunday

Today’s (Optional) Writing Prompt: How do you feel about where you live?

This SOC–and the writing prompt– is right on the money today. Where I live? A small house, in a small, semi-okay (my corner at least) neighborhood. A house with a basement and a giant yard. A giant yard with a giant oak and a giant pecan. And who knows how many voles. But there are also bunnies, so that’s pretty cool.

It’s like having a stack of those nesting Russian Dolls, you know? There’s the state- NC, where I have lived since I was 6, despite that Army brat thing. There’s my current city, Raleigh– which I like, except for when I’m missing my old city, Durham, or wishing I was in a tiny apartment in NY.

There’s my old house, which has a personality that I sometimes appreciate and sometimes hate. But it’s well built. There’s my yard, which is more than I can handle, honestly, but I still see as a challenge (says the woman who spent 30 minutes pulling a 3×3 section of crabgrass). Where I rocked my first baby- hours and hours of rocking with that baby. Where I conceived, gestated and birthed my second baby. Where I’m raising my sons.

How do I feel about it? I feel like it could be everything we need– if I wasn’t so afraid of a long-term commitment. Which sounds exactly like everything else in my life.
