Spring Allergies

March 29, 2012 in Allergies- Food and Environment, Just Life, Raising these kids

In this house, three out of the four people, and one of the two dogs have seasonal allergies. It’s just me and Cruizer– the dog who knocked me off the treadmill during a thunderstorm– that are enjoying the smell of the flowers right now. Misty, the old bitch (shush- that’s a technical term!) scratching herself on everything, and doing the sneeze-in-my-face after farting-near-my-nose. I think the farting is just her getting old– but zOMG. The [...]

Feeding the Small People

Right? Is my kid too: fat, thin, tall, short, active, lazy, worried, ambivalent, loud, quiet, shy, fearless. Is he happy, sad, confident or scared? Eating enough, or too much? Every caring mom worries. Some of us worry to a clinical degree–medicate!–but most of us worry within the bell curve of normal. Some of us worry about one thing to an extreme (child abductions, oh my!), while maintaining a comfortable level of sanity for everything else. [...]

Eggless Chocolate Black Bean Muffins

February 15, 2012 in Allergies- Food and Environment, My Disorganized Mind, Pinterest, Crafts, and Home Decor Projects

I made heart-shaped, chocolate black beans muffins for Z’s preschool Valentine’s Day Party. Why? Because I saw how on pinterest, (original link, here) and it’s just too easy. Insert marbles before baking to hold the cupcake liners and bake. I filled the liners first, then placed my marbles. Heart-shaped, chocolate-y goodness? But of course. Heart-shaped chocolate-y goodness that is made with black beans(!) but not eggs(!!) Huzzah, folks. In general, I’ve found Madhuram’s eggless cooking [...]

If you Give a Kid a Valium

February 28, 2011 in Adult ADHD Isn't a Bad Thing, Allergies- Food and Environment, Just Life, Raising these kids

Och–that title is bad, isn’t it? I’ve been stuck on the If you Give a Pig a Pancake books with E lately and just couldn’t help myself. Z is now adenoid-less. And, considering he screamed during his last CBC/well-child check up– to the point that the 2 year old brother muttered for him to “stop being a crybaby”– I anticipated more anxiety from him. Ahh…like his Momma– the little things cause breakdowns, but he rocks [...]

Dear Dr. ENT

February 1, 2011 in Allergies- Food and Environment, Just Life, Things that Make Me Twitchy

I cannot stand when anyone talks to me like I’m…less smart than they are. Especially when the sole source of the offender’s proof of superior intelligence is that they have MD, JD, PhD, MS, or any assorted combination following their name. I’ve known too many people with lots of abbreviations that couldn’t fight their way out of a paper sack with a pair of scissors and a flashlight So, Dr ENT– you can shove that [...]

Puff-Puff

January 22, 2011 in Allergies- Food and Environment, Just Life, Raising these kids

…here’s your inhaler, sweetie. In this case, inhaler is not a euphemism for something you’d see in the movie Friday, either. Nope, nothing so funny. Instead it’s my new mantra for Zach and his “reactive airway disease”, which seems like a really long way of saying pre-asthma. Or, probably going to be asthma soon, but since he isn’t technically wheezing we’re going to call it this other thing instead. And hey, it only took him [...]
